Participation in Summer School, Vienna, July 2016

The summer school “Key Challenges in rural development: Bringing economics, management and social sciences into practice” took place in Vienna. Over the course of 2 months, Kevin actively and successfully participated in the course programmes consisting of lectures, a field excursion, case study and practical work on development projects for rural communities.

He also reviewed papers of other students with subsequent discussion as well as presenting and defending a rural development project. From the field excursion, he jointly developed a presentation and co-produced a video on improving rural ecotourism in Lower Austria titled “Path of the Senses”.

This Summer School is an international cooperation organised by the Departments of Economics and Social Sciences, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), the Faculty of Economics and Management, Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague (CULS) and the Faculty of Agricultural Economics, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, SGGW on behalf of the Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS) in cooperation with University of Copenhagen, University of Hohenheim, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Wageningen University.

Kevin Obiero is in possession of a M.Sc. Degree in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences from Moi University (currently University of Eldoret) specialising in Aquatic Sciences and Aquaculture. He is currently pursuing his PhD studies at BOKU University, focusing on the role of extension systems in innovating aquaculture in Kenya, within the framework of the STRECAFISH project. Prior to starting his PhD research, Kevin was working as a research scientist at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), based at Sangoro Aquaculture Research Station, where he is in charge of research programmes. To upgrade his skills and professional experience, Kevin has attended several short courses and training programmes at international level including; Agriculture in Transition at Wageningen University, Fish Base and Fish Taxonomy Training at Royal Museum of Central Africa, Belgium, and Scientific Academic Exchange Programme at Nagasaki University, Japan.
